The Logia Approach: Six Essential Steps to Begin and Sustain a Coaching Journey

When starting a coaching relationship, a structured approach makes all the difference. Over 15 years of executive coaching experience, I’ve guided over 450 leaders and their teams through transformative journeys. While each client’s path is unique, I’ve found that a six-step framework consistently builds trust, clarity, and sustainable success.

If you’re considering executive coaching but are unsure what to expect, let me walk you through our proven process, designed to set clear intentions and foster lasting growth.

Step 1: Current State Assessment

The first step is all about understanding the current reality and defining the specifics of the coaching relationship.

We begin by meeting with the sponsor if one has been designated. They are often a supervisor or HR partner.  This helps gain perspective on the coachee’s role, challenges, and desired outcomes. This conversation shapes the arrangement and informs the coaching objectives. Additionally, we often gather a comprehensive profile of the coachee, covering their background, strengths, interests, and areas for development.

To add depth, we usually recommend assessment tools—such as personality or leadership style inventories—and review any available performance reviews or 360 feedback. We also explore the coachee’s work-life balance, setting the tone for an approach that supports growth in all areas.

Step 2: Goals & Thinking Process

In this phase, I work closely with the coachee to debrief the assessment materials and begin setting specific goals. Together, we have candid discussions about their professional aspirations, personal development, and how these goals align with any sponsor expectations.

These conversations often reveal new insights and can reshape initial goals. This is also when the coachee starts to clarify their motivations, which is crucial to their long-term commitment.

Step 3: Clarify & Strengthen

With goals now identified, we enter a refinement stage. I revisit our discussions and help the coachee test their goals to ensure they truly align with their values and priorities. Often, we make adjustments, adding more detail or adjusting timelines.

This step is critical for creating a clear, inspiring roadmap that the coachee fully owns and believes in. We refine until the coachee feels that this plan genuinely resonates.

Step 4: Accountability Framework

Next, we formalize a learning and development plan which clarify topics for coaching or mentoring. This Accountability Framework acts as a coaching blueprint that outlines how we’ll measure progress, celebrate milestones, and address any obstacles that may arise.

This blueprint is not only approved by the coachee but also endorsed by the sponsor. Establishing this shared understanding fosters transparency and reinforces commitment from everyone involved.

Step 5: Support & Sustain

Once the plan is in place, our coaching journey officially begins. Depending on the client’s needs, we meet once or twice a month for 60–90 minutes, and the engagement typically lasts six to twelve months. Across this period, we work through challenges, track progress, and celebrate successes.

Clients often find that as they reach initial goals, new challenges emerge. We adapt to these as they arise, ensuring that the coaching remains relevant and continues to provide fresh perspectives.

Step 6: Connect to Balance

Finally, we stay attuned to the coachee’s overall well-being and work-life balance. This is essential, especially in high-stakes leadership roles. Many clients have noted that this holistic approach enables them to tackle professional goals without losing sight of their personal lives.

Balance isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s integral to sustainable success. Through the coaching relationship, we help clients build resilience and maintain a healthy equilibrium.
